If you want to tint your car windows, then you have a variety of options.
From the tint material to how dark you go with your tint, you have near infinite options.
Also, you must keep in mind the laws around car window tint. These will limit your options, but not by much.
With these three things in mind, you can customize your car window tint a ton.
One of the most popular questions we get is, “how dark can I go with my car window tint?”
In this article, we’re going to share the “levels of car window tint,” as well as how dark you can go in the state of California based on the state’s laws.

What kind of car window tint material should I use?
There are a variety of car window tint materials. At Jet Black Tint, we only use the best for our customers, but we want to share the types so you understand what you’re buying if you don’t go with us (which would be a huge mistake).
Here are the different types of car window tint materials and some information on them:
Dyed Car Window Film
Dyed car window film is applied in layers. It does absorb sunlight as the UV rays pass through. This type of film is the most common and least expensive, but…
This type of car window film does not offer the best UV protection on the market. It’s got limited ability to block or absorb heat. And you’ll most likely need to replace it in less than three (3) years.
Metalized Car Window Tint
Metalized tints contain metal fragments. Why? These metal fragments or micro-particles help reflect sunlight away from your vehicle. As opposed to absorbing the UV rays, the metal reflects it. This tint is much more effective at keeping the heat out compared to the dyed tints, but…
One big downside with metal tint is that the metal micro-particles can negatively impact radio or GPS signals. So, if you’re a traveler or take calls in the car a lot, this tint may cause issues for you.
Hybrid Car Window Tint
As the name suggests, the hybrid car window tint includes dye and metal micro particles. This tint is the “best of both worlds” when it comes to dye and metal tints. It offers the upsides of both types of film, but…
This tint does offer a mirror-like appearance on the outside, which means more people will “see themselves” in your windows, causing more attention then you probably want.
One other upside is that this tint cost between dye and metal.
Carbon Car Window Tint
Carbon tint is made up of carbon fiber particles. These particles do not fade over time. This tint is much more effective than dye, metal, or hybrid. Carbon tint has a matte finish, which is much more low-profile, which a lot of people prefer as an aesthetic for their car.
What’s more, carbon window tint offers strong insulating features, which means it keeps the heat out and the cool in. Or, more accurately, it keeps the temperature on the inside of your car from changing drastically when the outside temperature is different.
With carbon car window tint, there are no downsides worth mentioning. You get a ton of upside and benefit for going with this tint.
Ceramic Car Window Tint
Ceramic tint is the only material that surpasses carbon tint. How? Ceramic tint blocks more than 99% of UV rays from the sun. This means you get a huge protection film on your glass when you go with ceramic. This tint does not contain dyes or metals so it won’t interfere with any kind of radio, GPS, or phone calls.
Ceramic car window tint does not conduct heat, which means sun reflection and temperature insulation is at peak performance with this tint.
Even more, ceramic tint increases the shatter proof benefit. In other words, a ceramic tint will more effectively keep your window from shattering into thousands of tiny pieces better than any other tint.
The downsides to ceramic car window tint are not worth mentioning because there are none.
You will pay a premium for this tint, but it’s worth every single penny.
How dark can I make my car tint?
As dark as you want, as long as it fits within the car window tint law.
In California, you’re able to tint your cars to 70% darkness; 30% visibility on all windows except the windshield. The windshield is allowed a “brow” tint for sun, but otherwise is not tintable by law.
Please ask us about tint laws on your consult call so we can discuss the laws with you, since they can change since the posting of this article.
