When you think about vehicle window tint application, does it excite you because of the career opportunities? If you are like one of the thousands of other eager tint technician hopefuls, you may be wondering what tint school entails. Here at Jet Black Tint, we offer a 4-day tint school in both San Francisco and Houston that prepares the average person to be a tint technician at one of our 13 current shops and beyond.
Four days is a condensed amount of time to learn such a methodical skill, but you’ll be amazed at what our instructors can teach and what real-world application helps you absorb in just a few days. Beyond the class itself, you’ll have access to a network of classmates and tint experts to help guide you when you start tinting outside the classroom, as well as workplace oversight by one of our tint experts until you are comfortable enough to fly on your own. Practice makes you proficient, and you’ll get plenty of it.
Our tint schools are comprised of a mix of classroom-style training and hands-on application on real vehicles with real tint products. Here are just 10 of the many things you’ll learn during your course.
Tint Film Types
All film types are not created equal and the quality of your work can be greatly affected by the products you use. The best tint technician can produce sub-par results if the quality of the tint they use is poor. On day one of tint school, we’ll review the different types of tint available on the current vehicle modification market. We’ll discuss various brands and the difference between dye, metallic, carbon, ceramic, and hybrid tints in terms of application and quality.
Hand cutting vs. Computer Cutting
In the tinting industry, the preference for hand cutting versus computer tint cutting is nearly evenly split. Many tint technicians find their preferred method and roll with it. During tint school, you’ll learn how to do and use both techniques. Even if you work in a shop that primarily uses computer cutting, you’ll be handicapped if you can’t hand cut when needed.
Prepping Windows For Tinting
Preparing the windows is one of the most important steps in the window tint installation process. If there are any corners cut in the cleaning and prepping of the windows, it will affect the overall appearance of the final outcome. We will show you the entire prepping process and offer tips and tricks to make your efforts more efficient and what to look out for to yield the best results.
Dry Shrinking Film
Jet Black Tint’s tint school will show you the proper way to dry shrink window tint. If not done properly, this step could result in a re-installation or a poor finished product. We’ll walk you through the steps and point out common mistakes. You’ll get a chance to try it for yourself before working on actual clients’ vehicles.
Tint Laws
Every state has laws governing vehicle tint allowances. Our tint school offers a high-level overview of national tint laws and an in-depth exploration of California or Texas laws, depending on the state you take your course in. This ensures you’ll be able to offer the best advice to your clients and avoid breaking any laws. We’ll discuss how dark tint can be, where it can be applied, and other applicable rules.
Removing Car Door Panels
Removing car door panels isn’t as difficult as it may seem, but should be done properly to avoid damaging the vehicle. Removing car door panels isn’t always necessary to properly install window tint, but can create a cleaner finish on some vehicles. Having the skills required to remove door panels professionally will set you up for success when you need to do it.
Tint Repair
Whether it’s our work or not, at some point, it’s likely that even the best window tint will need repair at some point. There are a lot of situations where we would much rather remove the damaged tint and install fresh product, but the client doesn’t want a replacement, or can’t afford it, so we make the best attempt to repair the damage. We’ll review some methods of window tint repair and give you hands-on practice before you try out your skills on a client’s vehicle.
Tint Film Replacement
Vehicle window tint film replacement is the complete process of removing all of the existing tint and its adhesive and then installing a fresh, new product. We’ll go over some tips on fully removing window tint, regardless of how it’s applied, and stripping the window down to its barest form. Only a pristine window is ready for installation, and we’ll show you how to get it there. The re-installation process is the same as the initial installation, so practicing tint replacement will reinforce your application skills.
Troubleshooting
The truth is that there will always be issues with window tint. Between product mishaps, installation differences, and user treatment of the tint, no two tint jobs will be the same. We’ll teach you how to assess the situation, make the best diagnosis, and plan a treatment that works for your client and the shop.
Intro to Tint Shop Management
While we definitely don’t expect anyone to become a tint pro in just four days, our tint school does include an introduction to tint shop management. We believe this helps our students have a better understanding of window tint as a business and helps support your success and our bottom line. We also love to promote from within and even offer exclusive opportunities for our employees to become franchise owners and carry on our name in their own tint shop. We’ll offer insight into running a local tint shop and even delve into some basic marketing. A growth mindset breeds successful employees and encourages entrepreneurs to view their jobs as careers.
