What’s a little help between friends? You and your buddy probably trade skills for all sorts of tasks, and we all have that car enthusiast friend who can fix anything. Seems like a great idea to save a few bucks and leave it to your friend to install your new window tint on your car, right? Not so fast. Here at Jet Black Tint, we’ve helped lots of good friends like you who eagerly let their friends flex their skills on their ride, only to be disappointed with the outcome and bring it to us to be fixed. We are here to offer you sound advice on a few reasons you should never let your friend tint your car.
Voids the Warranty
Does your window tint have a warranty? Not if it’s a DIY job in your home garage. If your friend works at a legitimate tint shop, they may be able to get you a deal that also comes with a product and craftsmanship warranty, in which case, let your friend — the tint expert — install your tint! But, if it’s just your high school bud who slapped tint film on his own car last summer and now considers himself the subject matter expert, make sure his product and work are under warranty. If they aren’t, we’d suggest taking your car to the pros.
There Are No Guarantees
One of the best parts about working with a professional shop for nearly any task is clear expectations and guarantees. When you trust your friend to take on the job of tinting your car, you may have it done on your lunch break or you may have to wait until the next holiday weekend. Additionally, if something is off or incorrect, do you have their word that they will correct it, or is this just a favor between friends? When you work with a legitimate tint shop like Jet Black Tint, you know exactly what timeframe, pricing, and craftsmanship to expect.
May Ruin a Friendship
Nobody likes to hear they did a sub-par job or that their friend doesn’t like the outcome of their hard work. Likewise, not many people appreciate being in a position where they have to either deal with a shoddy job or have their friend’s work redone. This is a situation that can easily turn into resentment and animosity, and in some cases, has completely destroyed friendships. We like to share the old adage that you should never mix business and pleasure, and you’re better off letting someone who’s not so close to your inner circle do the work. That way you’re free to complain if it’s not what you expected.
Avoid Unsightly Problems
Installing vehicle window tint seems like such a simple process, which leads most people to assume that just anyone can do it — until they try it, that is. We’ve all seen shoddy tint jobs, and when your friend has good intentions that aren’t backed up by experience, these issues, while unintentional, may stick with you longer than you’d like. Some common installation problems caused by inexperience and improper technique include:
Bubbles
Bubbles can be caused by inexperience or by cheap adhesive. While a minor annoyance to begin with, over time, they can cause big problems with both the tint and the glass beneath when they crack and begin to peel.
Crinkling and Folding
Bunching, crinkling, and folding are common problems in auto tint applications, even when professionally done. Of course, the pros know how to avoid it and correct the problem if it does happen to occur.
Trapped Dust or Dirt
Trapped dirt is the pearl of window tint, and not in a majestic opalescent way, but in a sandy annoyance, that festers beneath the surface. More than being a cringe-worthy sight, anything trapped between the glass and the tint film compromises adhesion and can create a hole in the tint that will peel and eventually ruin the entire piece of film. Trapped debris is a direct result of poor cleaning and lazy installation technique that can easily be avoided by scheduling your installation at your local Bay Area tint shop.
Off Cut Film
Perhaps one of the tasks that require the most skill and precision in window tint film installation is cutting. If the film is cut even slightly wonky or uneven, it will be noticeable once applied to your window. And, once applied, the film will be ruined if removed.
