It depends on your state, county, and preference.
Two of these three factors are “set in stone” with the law, but…
The third factor is one you get to decide on within the parameters of the law.
Now…

California Car Window Tint Law
In California, it’s sunny all year round.
One of the common vehicle investments is car window tint.
But…
There are specific laws in The Golden State one must follow in order to legally keep their car windows tinted.
What are those laws? Here they are:
Car Window Tint Darkness
Each state makes its own laws on car window tint darkness, but…
California is one of the more relaxed states on this, since it’s sunny all year round. Many cars include car window tint. And, many of the drivers in The Golden State spend an average of 2.5 hours on the road each and every day.
Before we dive into the legal limits of car window tint, please not what you read in this article is not legal advice, nor does Jet Black Tint act as a lawyer. Please seek your own information from state of California. We follow all mandated laws when installing car window tint for customers.
Here are the California state laws on car window tint darkness:
- Front Side Windows: 70%
- Back Side Windows: Any
- Rear Windows: Any
Not only does California define the darkness of car window tint limit, but they also set in law reflectivity of your car window tint.
Car Window Tint Reflectivity Law
Yes, you can get car window tint with reflection, but…
California is specific on how reflective, if at all, you can make your tint. And for good reason. A reflective tint keeps the sun off your eyes, but it sends it somewhere else – potentially at another drive who does not have car window tint, which can become a hazard on the road.
Here is the California car window tint reflectivity law:
- Reflectivity: No more reflective than a standard window
You may be wondering, what does this mean? We believe this is vague on purpose, but…
Most standard car windows do have a reflective glare to them when light hits the glass. So, how do you get a car window tint that follows the state law? The simple answer is to choose a car window tint that has zero reflective properties, but…
You can have some reflection, as along as it’s no more than a standard window, which we provide at Jet Black Tint when you have us take care of your car window tint.
Windshield “Eyebrow” Window Tint Law
On your front windshield, you’re allowed to add what’s called an “eyebrow.” This is a strip of car window tint that can reach no more than four inches down from the top of your glass.
This eyebrow is used to keep the sun out of your eyes while you drive. Many cars in California use this, since it is sunny all-year round.
Many of our customers get this installed on their windshields
Car Window Tint Color Law
If you want to get your car window tint colored, then you cannot use red, amber, or blue. These colors decrease visibility more than other colors. And, they are darker during nighttime due to how they interact with light (or lack thereof).
Again, you cannot use the follow colors for your car window tint:
- Red
- Amber
- Blue
Speak with your car window tint professional if you want your car window tint to be a certain color.
Back Car Window Tint Requires This
If you want to get your back car windows tinted, then you must have dual side mirrors. Since California allows “any” darkness of your back car windows, you’ll need dual side mirrors for visibility reasons.
