5 Questions to Ask About PPF

Looking into paint protection film to preserve your car’s new look? Great idea! Paint protection film (PPF) is one of the most economical ways to keep your ride looking new and offers benefits that a new paint job just can’t — for more on that topic, read our previous post. In today’s post, our PPF installation experts offer some advice on the things to ask yourself before you schedule your service at your local tint shop.

Would My Car Benefit From PPF?

The first thing you’ll need to ask yourself is if your car would benefit from PPF installation. Generally speaking, most cars absolutely would benefit from and could enjoy the advantages of paint protection film. Some of the benefits of PPF installation include:

  • Extended lifespan of vehicle paint
  • Decreased effects of wear and tear including fading and staining
  • Protection against scratches, rusting, and gouges
  • Increased resale value
  • Improved curb appeal
  • Add texture, color, and/or your logo (similar to car wrap)
  • Easy to clean surface

The only vehicles that won’t immediately benefit from PPF are those that have already sustained sun fading, rusting, or other damage that being covered will only accelerate. Not to fear, though, once corrected, PPF acts as a protective layer to seal in repairs. For instance, cars that have rusted undercarriages — thanks, coastal salty sea air! — a light sanding and buffing can usually correct minor damage. Paint touch-ups and a protective ceramic coating can prevent future problems.

How Much Coverage Do I Need?

The second thing to consider is how much coverage your ride needs. Of course, the more protection, the better, but it’s not always necessary. A few things to consider include what threats do your car face, what’s your budget, and what’s the main purpose of the PPF? For instance, if you’ve got a brand new car and want to protect it, full-body coverage is your best bet, but a full-front will do if you’re on a budget. However, if you’re looking to change the look of your car without getting a new paint job, you’ll definitely want full-body coverage. What Brand PPF Should I Get Installed?

Not all paint protection film is made equally, so it’s important to do your research about the various PPF brands available. While there are several well-trusted paint protection film brands available on the current market, most installation shops prefer one over the other for different reasons. Be leary about PPF brands that are cheap, both in price and known quality. A good quality indicator is a brand that has been around for a while and is trusted by several shops in your area.

At Jet Black Tint, we use Global® Paint Protection Film because of its superior durability and ease of installation. To learn more about Global film, read our post on the topic.

Who Should I Trust to Install My PPF?

Once you’ve realized the benefits and return on investment of paint protection film, you’re ready to schedule your installation. A simple online search will have you weeding through tons of local PPF application shops, which can make it difficult to decide who to trust with your car. A few simple ways to know which shop you can count on is to look at their reviews and to see their work. Ask a few questions of any potential shop before booking your service including:

  • What does the prep work process look like?
  • Where will my car be stored if you have to keep it overnight?
  • Are your installation technicians certified?
